Pall Mall (Paul-Maul or Pel-Mel) is a RJ Reynolds cigarette brand named after the famous London street with the same name. headquatered in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Internationally it is sold by British American Tobacco in multiple locations. Pall Mall continues to be RJ Reynolds top selling brand worldwide with Newports taking that position in the U.S.
History
Pall Mall was created in 1899 by the Black Butler company to appeal to the rich upper class. In 1907, Pall Mall was acquired by American Tobacco. The company used the brand to test new ideas such as different ways of packing and stuffing tobacco. They created the King size and 100mm size cigarette which both were very successful. By 1960 Pall Mall had become the best selling cigarette in the American market. They were phased out after the sales started to dwindle.
In 1994, Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation bought both Lucky Strike and Pall Mall. In 2004, RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company took over Brown & Williamson and to this day sell the Pall Mall brand in the US with British American Tobacco selling it worldwide.
Taste and Price
In the United states they are priced at $3-$5 depending on the area of the country. Being as they are a sub-premium they are typically 50¢-$1.25 cheaper than premium brands such as Marlboro or Camel. They are praised for having a longer burn time than the average cigarette with a reasonable comparison being to a Black N Mild filtered cigar. It is generally referred to as a plain cigarette, having little or no distinguishing flavor. The paper is said to have a slight chemical taste and overall the cigarette produces lots of smoke compared to other sub-premium or premium cigarettes.
